ZODIAC (o ituKAos, from 'Cv&cov, " a little animal "), in astronomy and astrology, an imaginary zone of the heavens within which lie the paths of the sun, moon and principal planets.

Zodiac
The zodiac stretches about 8-9 degrees either side of the ecliptic, and is the region of the sky where we can find the Sun, Moon and planets (except for Pluto).

The zodiacal light in the eastern sky before the beginning of morning twilight. A reddish auroral glow can also be seen near the horizon, especially at the left.

Zodiac is the trade name for a popular type of inflatable dinghy. Zodiac was the nom de guerre of a serial killer who operated in California during the 1960s and 1970s. He or she has yet to be identified or apprehended.

The Zodiac
The Zodiac is a family of constellations that lie along the ecliptic (the plane in which most of our Solar System lies).

Let us view the zodiac signs from the sky gazers viewpoint as opposed to the astrologist's. And remember there are more constellations out there. The 12 zodiac constellations are just a part of the adventure.

The band of the zodiac is some sixteen degrees wide, extending about eight degrees north and south of what's called the ecliptic -- the Sun's path through the stars.

Constellation Gemini, the Twins, is the northernmost of the zodiacal constellations and among the brightest.

Right away you run into a problem with the zodiac constellations---some are large (like Scorpio or Virgo) and others are small (like Aries and Cancer).

An ancient constellation and one of the twelve constellations of the Zodiac. Sagittarius is the second constellation that is depicted as a centaur, a creature that is half-horse and half-man. The other constellation is Centaurus.

If the Greeks of Homer and Hesiod's day knew of the Babylonian zodiac they did not write about it. The first clear evidence we have for an extensive set of Greek constellations comes from the astronomer Eudoxus (c.390-c.340 BC).

This explains why the position of the sun against the zodiac changes very slowly. For example, the position of the equinox (the position of the sun with respect to the background sky seen at the beginning of spring) is in the constellation Pisces.

It also was very faint, only about half as bright as the notoriously difficult Gegenschein (counterglow - a bright patch in the zodiacal light, directly opposite to the Sun).

The constellation is ancient, and was one of the earliest members of the zodiac, perhaps transferred to the heavens from far older earthly concerns.

The 13 Constellations of the Zodiac
The Zodiac is the ring of constellations that the Sun seems to pass through each year as the Earth orbits around it.

The path that the Sun traces out on the celestial sphere is called the ecliptic and the twelve constellations that the Sun goes through are the zodiac.

This is one of the 13 constellations of the Zodiac.
The center of our galaxy, the Milky Way, lies in the direction of Sagittarius. It is believed to be about 29,000 light years away from us.
