zonal flow Alternating regions of westward and eastward flow, roughly symmetrical about the equator, associated with the belts and zones in the atmosphere of a jovian planet.
zonal flow (Glossary of Weather Terms for Storm Spotters - NOAA) Large-scale atmospheric flow in which the east-west component (i.e., latitudinal) is dominant. The accompanying meridional (north-south) component often is weaker than normal.
