Airport Surveillance Radar (ASR)
Airport surveillance radar (ASR) provides relatively short-range coverage within about 40 miles of an airport and assists "approach control" in handling terminal traffic.

This approach has replaced the PAR in most places with radar. Controllers are requires to practice these approaches and may be more than willing to give you a practice approach.

Airport Surveillance Radar. Approach control radar used to detect and display an aircraft's position in the terminal area. ASR provides range and azimuth information but does not provide elevation data. Coverage of the ASR can extend up to 60 miles.
