Amphibian An aircraft that can fly off of water or land. The wheels retract into the hull or floats, depending upon the type of aircraft. An amphibian can land on water and then extend the landing gear to allow it to pull up onto the shore.

AMPHIBIAN, AMPHIBION - A SEAPLANE or FLOATPLANE with retractable wheels for use on land, as well. The latter spelling was used in the '20s and '30s but has since fallen out of favor.

Amphibians
Amphibians are like floatplanes, except they also feature retractable wheels for operating from paved runways or grass strips.

Prior to commencing training an applicant must hold at least a UK or JAR PPL (A) with a SEP (Land) Class Rating and a valid Class 2 medical certificate.

A Twin Engine Grumman Goose amphibian flying boat.The term "seaplane" is used by some to refer only to floatplanes (aircraft with floats as landing gear), with the flying boat being a distinct type of craft.

Alphonse Pénaud also began work on a two-passenger amphibian monoplane. In 1880 Pénaud attended a meeting of the French Aeronautical Society.

You have to land with the wings level; otherwise one engine would hit the ground. A similar situation arises with certain amphibian aircraft that have outrigger-type floats or sponsons far from the centerline.
