GPS locates an airport by a reference point called the ARP. This point is usually near the center of the airport itself. You want to remain relatively close to the airport.

Airport Reference Point (ARP): The airport reference point is the latitude and longitude of a point that is the approximate center of all existing and proposed landing and takeoff areas.

AIRPORT REFERENCE POINT (ARP) - The approximate geometric center of all usable runway surfaces.
