When ARTS computer fails all aircraft are given the same discrete code, slashes appear instead of numbers. When a complete radar and computer failure occurs we have a reversion to CENRAP which will use a radar signal from one of centres antennae.

ARTS III. The Beacon Tracking Level of the modular programmable automated radar terminal system in use at medium to high activity terminals. ARTS III detects, tracks, and predicts secondary radar-derived aircraft targets.

Automated Radar Terminal System (ARTS) − Computer-aided radar display subsystems capable of associating alphanumeric data − such as aircraft identification, altitude, and airspeed − with aircraft radar returns.
