ASOS is broadcasted over discrete VHF frequencies and the voice portion of a local navaid as they are designed to be able to reach out as far as 25 nautical miles horizontally in all directions, and up to 10,000 feet Above Ground Level (AGL).

Automated airport weather stations are automated sensor suites which are designed to serve aviation and meteorological observing needs for safe and efficient aviation operations and weather forecasting.

The ASOS/AWOS visibility readings are said to be within 1/2-mile of observers readings. Accuracy seems to improve with distance. The automated systems use a reading from a black disk on the horizon for day and a small light at night.

Both ATIS and AWOS/ASOS provide information on airport winds, but the information often is either old (ATIS) or not applicable to the approach or to the runway itself.

The basic difference between these two automated weather systems is that the ASOS is comprised of a standard suite of weather sensors and is a product of a National Weather Service (NWS), Department of Defense (DoD), ...
