Cruising Speed. The normal operating speed of an aeroplane. This may vary widely according to circumstances. An aeroplane normally cruises at about 85 percent of its top speed at any particular height.

 


With a 75 mph cruising speed, the Cub isn't going to take you very far very quickly, but you'll enjoy every second of it. The front seat is a little cramped and blind while the back seat is more or less comfortable with great side visibility.

Maximum structural cruising speed (VNO) can be seen where the green area stops. The area between VS and VNO is the normal operating range of the aircraft shown in green on the airspeed indicator.

The power setting used is not changed during the chandelle until the recovery stage, when it may be increased until the aircraft is re-established at a normal cruising speed, at which point the power is returned to a normal cruise setting.

29 provides us with the size of registration marks and specifically allows us, as owners of experimental aircraft, to use 3 inch high numbers and letters providing our maximum cruising speed is less than 180 knots.

That is, the cruising speed actually increases at reduced weights. This is not an exception to the real rule that speeds should vary with weight at a given angle of attack, because cruising speed is not tied to a particular angle of attack.

However, some aircraft with turboprops can have cruising speeds that exceed 500 knots. Large military and civil turbo-prop aircraft, such as the Lockheed L-188 Electra are types of aircraft that are currently in use today.

Cruising speeds are at a constant mach number, often about 82 percent of the speed of sound. This translates to a groundspeed of about 550 miles per hour, although that too can vary considerably with headwinds, tailwinds and other factors.
