Cyclone. A tropical revolving storm with winds of hurricane force, circulating anti-clockwise in the northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern hemisphere. In temperate latitudes a cyclone is properly a Depression.

 


Developing anti-cyclones - "highs" and high pressure ridges, are associated with converging air aloft and consequent wide area subsidence with diverging air below .

Due to national security many airports are now surrounded by cyclone-type fences and closed gates, creating a "prison yard" first impression. Unfortunately, that is the price we pay for security today.

Whereas the B-17 used 9-cylinder Wright R-1820 Cyclone engines, the Consolidated design would use twin-row, 14-cylinder Pratt & Whitney R-1830 Twin Wasp radials of 1000 hp (746 kW).
