Dorsal Fin An extension of the vertical fin forward of the main part of the fin, and against the fuselage. On the top, or "dorsal" side of the aircraft.

DORSAL FIN - A lateral fin/rudder extension on the top of a fuselage. Opposite of VENTRAL FIN.
DOWNWASH - The air deflected perpendicular to the direction of movement of an airfoil.

Dorsal. A term used to denote the longitudinal member which runs from bow to stern along the top centre line of the hull of a flying-boat. Applied to a gun turret means that on top of the fuselage. Derived from the back fin of fish.

DORSAL - Relating to the upper surface of an aircraft's fuselage.

DRAG - A force exerted on a moving body in a direction opposite to its direction of motion.

III showed that the rear gunner could not efficiently operate both the dorsal and ventral positions.

A tiltwing aircraft is similar in concept to a tiltrotor design. Whereas a tilt rotor rotates the propeller from axial to dorsal, a tiltwing rotates the entire wing, not just the nacelles or prop and shaft.

Rudder: A control surface on fixed-wing aircraft, usually mounted at aft end of the fuselage sticking up (like a dorsal fin), that controls yaw (heading), and is controlled by the pedals.

for the fin has some dependency on the net sum of all the restoring moments associated with the aircraft fuselage and undercarriage side surfaces fore (negative moments) and aft (positive moments) of the cg. Some aircraft have ventral or dorsal fins ...

62 mm machine guns, one mounted on the nose and the other in the tail position, plus two more machine guns of the same caliber in the dorsal and ventral positions.
