Aviation ElevatorElevons

The elevon is used as an aileron. Ailerons control motion along the longitudinal axis. The longitudinal axis is an imaginary line that runs from the nose to the tail. Motion about the longitudinal axis is called roll.

Elevons
An elevator split into 2 halves which can be operated independently so that the same control surfaces can be used to control the roll of an aircraft as well as the pitch. Often seen on Flying Wings and Delta planform models.

ELEVON - A hinged device on the rear portion of an aircraft wing combining the functions of an elevator and an aileron.

ELEVONS - Movable control surfaces which act collectively as elevators, but differentially as ailerons.

ELT - Emergency locator transmitter; emits a homing signal from a crashed aircraft to simplify location for rescue services.

The solution usually adopted is to provide large elevator and/or elevon (combined elevator and aileron) surfaces on the wing trailing edge. These must generate large control forces, as their distance from the aerodynamic center is small.

On the tailless aircraft the pitch controls and roll controls must both be on the wing. There can be separate elevators and ailerons or they can be combined into one set of controls known as Elevons.
