Excessive in flight idling of the engine will cause the engine to cool to the point that fuel may not vaporize in the carburettor. This drastically leans the mixture and can fail the engine.

A 'contained' engine failure is one in which components might separate inside the engine but either remain within the engine's cases or exit the engine through the tail pipe.

Engine Failure on Takeoff

The cause for the engine failure remained unknown. Carburetor icing was ruled out as a reason, because the ambient temperature was substantially below freezing and the humidity was very low. A mechanical failure of the engine was also ruled out.
