The Corsair served with the US Navy, US Marines, the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm and the Royal New Zealand Air Force (postwar, the French Aeronavale and other services), and quickly became the most capable carrier-based fighter-bomber of the war.
The first F2As to arrive in Britain were aircraft which should have gone to Belgium, by then occupied; these were flown by 805th and 885th Squadrons of the Fleet Air Arm and took part in the defense of Crete, but not as front line aircraft.
