These signals contain information about the flight: aircraft's identification letters or flight number and its altitude. Upon departure, pilots receive a 4-digit transponder code and set their transponder to that code.

Also, the use of a single flight number for an itinerary that really involves a connection with two separate flight numbers, thus making the itinerary appear to be a direct flight with a change of aircraft as opposed to a connection.

Under a code sharing agreement participating airlines can present a common flight number, which provides clearer routing for the passenger and may ease connection times.

Direct Flight: Any flight between two places that carries a single flight number. Unlike a nonstop, a direct flight will make one or more stops between two places. The passenger may have to change planes or even change airlines.

CONNECTION: Changing to a different airplane en route to the final destination. Actual mileage, connection bonuses and segment promotion credits are earned only if the connecting flight number is different from the originating flight number.
