Area forecast (FA). A report that gives a picture of clouds, general weather conditions, and visual meteorological conditions (VMC) expected over a large area encompassing several states.

 



Forecast. A statement of weather to be expected over a given area or route during a definite period.


Forced Landing. The unpremeditated landing of an aeroplane usually caused by mechanical breakdown or bad weather.

An Area Forecast (FA) reports the general weather conditions of a particular region. The contiguous states are divided into 6 regions for which area forecasts are prepared.

The air temperature affects the efficiency/fuel consumption of aircraft engines.

FDR - flight data recorder, popularly known as a 'black box' (actually painted bright orange), by which various parameters of an aircraft's flight performance are recorded for analysis in the event of an incident or accident.

The weather forecast indicated that if we could leave on Friday morning we might beat a snowstorm set to clobber Colorado Springs on Saturday evening. Fortunately, the forecast was wrong.

Weather forecaster
Any person approved by the USAF or Navy Air Weather Services or by the National Weather Service to forecast aviation weather for flight planning.

SEVERE WEATHER FORECAST ALERTS- Preliminary messages issued in order to alert users that a Severe Weather Watch Bulletin (WW) is being issued. These messages define areas of possible severe thunderstorms or tornado activity.

The winds-aloft forecasts are never precise enough to allow super-accurate dead reckoning.
You might want to deviate around some isolated but threatening cloud build-up.

TAF
Terminal Area Forecast (weather forecast)
TAIL DRAGGER
The nickname of an airplane that sits on its tail with the two main wheels in front and a tail wheel in the rear.

As used in aviation forecasts, the altitude (in feet MSL) at which water freezes.
Freezing Rain
Droplets of rain that freeze immediately on contact with structures or vehicles.

In the aviation world meteorologists use the location of the jet stream as an aid in weather forecasting. Flight time can be affected by either flying with or against the stream.

At this point in 1957, the infamous White Paper was published in England, forecasting that manned aircraft would be replaced with missiles by 1970.

Since aircraft purchases take time (often two or three years, if there is a production backlog), airlines also must do some economic forecasting before placing new aircraft orders.

Noise Exposure Map (NEM) - A geographic depiction of an airport, its noise contours for existing conditions and as forecast for five years in the future, and surrounding area developed in accordance with FAR Part 150 guidance.

For example, when prevailing low ceilings are forecast or observed over a given area an IFR AIRMET is issued. Though AIRMETs are nominally for all aircraft, they are much more significant for small aircraft.

The point is that I have over 3,000 hours of flight time, a CFI, MEI, ATP certificate and I am afraid to fly when there are thunderstorms forecast. I am also afraid of icing. I had a good friend killed that way.

The line person states that the fuel tanks have been topped off but the left tank gauge doesn't read accurately, and suggests you had better get moving because scattered thunderstorms are forecast later in the day.

but keep your seat belt securely fastened. An airplane may disappoint a good pilot, but it won't surprise him. Any pilot who relies on a terminal forecast can be sold the Brooklyn Bridge.
