FPM: Feet Per Minute - How fast your're going up or down.
GA: General Aviation. You know, the little airplanes that don't say 'AMERICAN' on the side.
Glide Slope: The part of the ILS that provides vertical information.

are descending at about 500 FPM. This is the standard descent rate. With your high elevator setting, your glide is virtually flat and you can let the airplane land itself exactly as it's con-figured now. It won't even bounce.

For instance, let's assume that your airplane descends at 500 FPM at 120 knots indicated airspeed with its power set to 1,900 RPM. Now, suppose you're six miles from a fix and 1,500 feet above its minimum crossing altitude.

If the airplane is descending at 750 FPM, the altimeter could be off by an additional 70 feet, due to friction in the mechanism (FAR 43 Appendix E).

The term "Vortex Ring State" is used to describe the actual swirling of the air within the rotor system itself that causes "Settling With Power". Vortex Ring State can begin to occur when you have 300 Feet per minute (FPM) as a rate of descent.
