Grass Strips
If you own enough land, and if your local and state officials don't mind, you can build an airport using a simple grass, dirt, or gravel strip. The best of these will look like groomed golf course fairways.

When I would get saturated with training or in a slump, we would go fly somewhere fun like the islands in Lake Erie or Pete's farm in Pennsylvania (which has a 2000-foot grass strip) to camp or just hang out for awhile.

Smaller airports for meant for light, private aircraft can be just a large grass strip to land and take-off airplanes, while large, commercial airports can have many square miles of property with several runways, large terminals, ...

The United States possesses the largest, most extensive aviation system in the world with more than 18,000 airports, ranging from large commercial transportation centers enplaning more than 30 million passengers annually, to small grass strips ...

Here there is but one grass strip, 1000 feet in length and oriented north/south.

I flew their totally stock Seneca II regularly in and out of a 2,000-foot grass strip in central Wisconsin. The airplane never knew the difference. On a good day, I could touch down and stop in less than half the strip.
