Ground Speed
Ground speed is the actual speed that an aircraft travels over the ground, and is also referred to as 'shadow speed.' Ground speed combines the aircraft's air speed and the wind speed relative to the aircraft's direction of flight.

GROUND SPEED - The actual speed that an aircraft travels over the ground"its "shadow speed"; it combines the aircraft's AIR SPEED and the wind speed relative to the aircraft's direction of flight.

Our ground speed continues to increase and more resistance can be felt on the control stick. Begin moving the control stick forward, but only slightly, and you will see and feel the tail of the airplane lift off the ground.

(See GROUND SPEED.)
SPEED ADJUSTMENT- An ATC procedure used to request pilots to adjust aircraft speed to a specific value for the purpose of providing desired spacing. Pilots are expected to maintain a speed of plus or minus 10 knots or 0.

Every ground speed has a critical altitude at which a given radius circle will allow the pilot to keep the wingtip on a point. As the circle is flown the wind affects the ground speed differently at every point.

Target with a ground speed of 300 knots or less.
SMASH
Directive to turn on/off anti-collision lights.

When the skids are quite close to the ground, the pilot flares to kill ground speed.

The widespread use of Global Positioning Systems (GPS) allows cockpit navigation systems to provide air speed and ground speed more or less directly.

By taking off into the wind (the wind generates part of the lift) the aircraft lifts off sooner and this will result in a lower ground speed and therefore a shorter take-off run for the aircraft to become airborne. It is therefore recommended.

Some are obvious ("Never pass up a chance to get gas or visit a restroom") while others are less so ("The severity of swerves on landing are a function of the square of the ground speed).

The system employs radar signals to detect and measure ground speed and drift angle, using the aircraft compass system as its directional reference.

Ground track angle (GTA).
Direction of ground speed vector with respect to true north; Synonyms: true track; Symbols: eta; Typical Units: rad, deg; ...

AIRSPEED INDICATOR - (ASI) An instrument or device that measures the air speed of an aircraft through an air mass, but not its ground speed.

Distance measuring equipment (DME) does what its name implies: It allows pilots to measure their distance from a VOR station or other navigational aid. DMEs typically display the distance, ground speed, ...

3, the angle of attack will be the same and the indicated airspeed will be the same — but the true airspeed will be greater, the vertical speed will be greater, and the ground speed will be greater, ...

Ground speed: Actual speed of an airplane as measured relative to the ground.
GS: Glideslope. Vertical guidance, part of an ILS, establishing the safe glidepath to a runway. A standard ILS glideslope is 3 degrees.
