heavy aircraft - A class of aircraft capable of takeoff weights of 300,000 pounds or more whether or not they are operating at this weight during a particular phase of flight.

Heavy - suffix used in RT call-signs to indicate that the aircraft is a large transport, alerting controllers and following aircraft to the possibility of wake turbulence (which see).

Heavy Maintenance
Heavy Maintenance - Heavy Maintenance is any maintenance, inspection, repair, or alteration a manufacturer has designated that requires specialized training, equipment, or facilities.

HEAVY (AIRCRAFT)-
(See AIRCRAFT CLASSES.)
HEIGHT ABOVE AIRPORT- The height of the Minimum Descent Altitude above the published airport elevation. This is published in conjunction with circling minimums.

HEAVY EQUIIPMENT POINT OF IMPACT (HEPI). The point of intended impact of heavy drop loads, normally 500 yards in from the leading edge of the drop zone. Refer to the drop zone charts for exact distances as they vary with actual size of each drop zone.

HEAVY JETS See 'Large-Cabin Jets.'
HORSEPOWER The motive energy required to raise 550 lbs. one foot in one second, friction disregarded.

A heavy airplane like a C5-A flying slowly is the biggest threat, because it needs lots of circulation to support all that weight at a low airspeed. So the most important rule is to beware of an aircraft that is heavy and slow.

Moderate and Heavy Freezing Rain
Precipitation of liquid water particles which freezes upon impact with the ground or other exposed objects, either in the form of drops of more than 0.

DRAG CHUTE - A heavy-duty parachute attached to an aircraft's structure which can be used to reduce its landing run.

DRONE - A pilotless aircraft, usually following a predetermined or programmed set of maneuvers. See also RPV.

Heavier-than-air Craft. More correctly "aerodyne." Includes all aeroplanes, gliders, gyroplanes and helicopters.

If the weight is too far forward the machine is nose-heavy. If the weight is too far behind the center of lift the machine is tail-heavy.
54. Aspect Ratio.-The ratio of span to chord of a wing or any other aerofoil.
55. Gliding Angle (Volplane).

Superior marksmanship/airmanship was to make up for the lack of heavy guns. This clever hope failed to materialize. The plane's light wing loading and fundamentals limited its top speed, diving ability and punch.

Heavy: Suffix used in radio transmission callsigns (for example: "United 492 Heavy") to indicate the aircraft is capable of generating wake turbulence.

After extremely heavy rains, a dam across the South Fork of the Conemaugh River, 12 miles above the city, gave way and released 700 acres of water 60 to 70 feet deep.

To resist all these stresses without fracturing, a single-skin laminate must be relatively thick and heavy.

By looking into the glare of a light you will detect heavy and light areas of material. Of course, heavy areas will often result in sags or runs. Paint the edges of the structure first. Edges often do not receive an adequate amount of paint.

To ensure the destruction of such large bombers, the MiG-15 carried heavy cannon armament: two 23 mm cannon with 80 rounds per gun and a single massive 37 mm cannon with 40 rounds.

And while every GPS satellite is equipped with such a clock, they are much too heavy and expensive to put into every GPS receiver. Instead, there's an indirect way to make sure that your receiver measures time as precisely as an atomic clock.

The servo-flap does the work of more complex and heavy hydraulic control systems. Hence for this system the total control forces would be much lower because the work to move the blade happens right where lift is being generated.

Glenn Curtiss had designed a plane that could take off and land on water and thus could be built larger than any plane to date, because it did not need the heavy undercarriage required for landing on hard ground.

"Don't let age stop you! If you can drive a car, especially in heavy traffic, you can fly an airplane. Actually, driving in heavy traffic is a lot harder and places you more at risk than learning to fly.
