Brake horsepower means the power delivered at the propeller shaft (main drive or main output) of an aircraft engine.

 


Horsepower
By the American definition, one horsepower (HP) is the amount of energy required to lift 550 pounds one foot in one second, disregarding any friction.

HYPERSONIC - Speed of flight at or greater than Mach 5.0, exceeding SUPERSONIC.

Brake Horsepower. (Abbreviated b.h.p.) The Horsepower available at the propeller shaft of an aero engine. It differs from the Indicated Horsepower by the power needed to overcome the internal friction of the engine.

bhp - brake horsepower.

Bleed air - Hot compressed air taken from turbine engines.

shp - shaft horsepower.
SID - standard instrument departure. A standard IFR departure route enabling air traffic controllers to issue abbreviated clearances and thus speed the flow of traffic.
