Initial approach fix (IAF)
Initial approach fix (IAF). The fix depicted on IAP charts where the instrument approach procedure (IAP) begins unless otherwise authorized by ATC.

 


Initial Approach Fix
The FAA has determined (1994) that the IAF is a required route in a non-radar environment unless you have a contrary clearance. The IAF can be part of the en route flight where the en route 'feeds' traffic into the IAF.

INITIAL APPROACH FIX- The fixes depicted on instrument approach procedure charts that identify the beginning of the initial approach segment(s).
