Instrument Approach A procedure for safely descending to an airport from instrument conditions. An airport may have one or more instrument approach procedures published, or none at all.

Instrument Approach (IAP)
A detailed IFR procedure intended to allow a pilot to land at an airport that is clouded over.

Instrument Approach Procedures
These are the special step-by-step procedures that pilots must follow to safely arrive at or depart from an airport or heliport in low visibility conditions.

Instrument approach - A series of predetermined maneuvers for the orderly transfer of an aircraft under instrument flight conditions from the beginning of the initial approach to a landing, or to a point from which a landing may be made visually.

Instrument Approach Procedures (IAP) Charts
Portray the aeronautical data which is required to execute an instrument approach to an airport. These charts depict the procedures, including all related data, and the airport diagram.

Instrument Approach: An approach to an airport, with intent to land, when the visibility is less than 3 miles and/or when the ceiling is at or below the minimum initial altitude.

If no instrument approach procedure has been published in FAR Part 97 for an airport, the ceiling and visibility minimums are those allowing descent from the MEA, approach, and landing under basic VFR. FAR Part 91.169(C)(2) ...

When practicing an instrument approach, I will tell you if/when we break out of the simulated clouds. If in doubt, you can ask whether we have broken out. This is another decisionmaking exercise.

Simultaneous Offset Instrument Approach - A technique by which two planes can land on runways located closer than the current FAA specification (4300 feet) for simultaneous landings.

"Category II operations", with respect to the operation of aircraft, means a straight-in ILS approach to the runway of an airport under a Category II ILS instrument approach procedure issued by the Administrator or other appropriate authority.

Arrival extensions for instrument approach procedures (IAPs) may be Class D or Class E airspace.

Approach speeds can be about the same-75 knots-and instrument approaches work out well in either airplane at the usual 90 to 100 knots.

ILS (Instrument Landing System) A precision instrument approach system utilizing radio transmitters at the runway ends which provide precise left-right and up-down indications to the pilot permitting aircraft to land during periods of low ceilings or ...

Also CATegory when referring to certain instrument landing systems which require special aircraft instrumentation, certification and pilot qualification beyond those needed for standard instrument approaches (e.g.

Used correctly, these systems can provide increased navigation capability and accuracy, instrument approaches in locations where no ground-based approach aids are available and better situational awareness.
