Instrument Approach Procedures
These are the special step-by-step procedures that pilots must follow to safely arrive at or depart from an airport or heliport in low visibility conditions.

Instrument Approach Procedures (IAP) Charts
Portray the aeronautical data which is required to execute an instrument approach to an airport. These charts depict the procedures, including all related data, and the airport diagram.

INSTRUMENT APPROACH PROCEDURE- A series of predetermined maneuvers for the orderly transfer of an aircraft under instrument flight conditions from the beginning of the initial approach to a landing or to a point from which a landing may be made ...

If no instrument approach procedure has been published in FAR Part 97 for an airport, the ceiling and visibility minimums are those allowing descent from the MEA, approach, and landing under basic VFR. FAR Part 91.169(C)(2) ...

Standard Instrument Approach Procedures - see U.S. Terminal Procedures Publication.

PRECISION INSTRUMENT APPROACH PROCEDURE - A standard instrument procedure for a pilot to approach an airport, in which both electronic course guidance and an electronic glide scope are provided.

"Category II operations", with respect to the operation of aircraft, means a straight-in ILS approach to the runway of an airport under a Category II ILS instrument approach procedure issued by the Administrator or other appropriate authority.

Arrival extensions for instrument approach procedures (IAPs) may be Class D or Class E airspace.

The publications depicting instrument approach procedures are called Terminal Procedures, but are commonly referred to by pilots as "approach plates".

performance-based navigation - Performance-based navigation specifies RNAV system performance requirements for aircraft operating along an ATS route, on an instrument approach procedure, or in airspace.

An airport may have one or more instrument approach procedures published, or none at all. Each approach is custom designed, and takes into account the radio navigation aids available, the various runway, and obstructions in the area.

PRECISION APPROACH PROCEDURE
means a standard instrument approach procedure in which an electronic glide slope is provided, such as ILS and PAR.

Nonprecision approach - A standard instrument approach procedure providing runway alignment but no glide slope or descent information.
Operation - A takeoff or landing by an aircraft.

procedure turn - manoeuvre which reverses the direction of an aircraft's flight during an instrument approach procedure to enable it to intercept the final approach course.
psi - pounds per square inch, a measurement of pressure.

With respect to the operation of aircraft, means a straight-in ILS approach to the runway of an airport under a Category II ILS instrument approach procedure issued by the administrator or other appropriate authority.
