Landing flare

Landing Flare: A pyrotechnic flare attached to the underside of an aeroplane which, when lighted by the pilot, provides a bright illumination of the ground beneath, thus facilitating landing at night.

Landing Flare Stall
There are pilots who use trim is make the flare to landing. This is a trim practice not uncommon among Piper pilots. Piper's become quite heavy in the flare and pilots often use trim to ease the load.

One time during a landing flare I said to the pilot, “Rabbit on the runway, go around now.” Knowing my reputation for this ruse, the fellow glimpsed over the cowling at the fictitious rabbit and said, “Hasta la vista, baby.

Autoland requires the use of a radio altimeter to determine the aircraft's height above the ground very precisely so as to initiate the landing flare at the correct height (usually about 50 feet).

As mentioned above, the landing flare lasts only a few seconds, and if you do a hundred landings you still have only a few minutes of experience handling a flaring airplane. Practicing slow flight at altitude is a tremendous help. Practice this.

Approach- IFR: From the IAF to the beginning of the landing flare. VFR: From the point of VFR pattern entry, or 1000 feet above the runway elevation, to the beginning of the landing flare. Approach is a phase of flight.
