Longeron - the main longitudinal strength-carrying member of an aircraft fuselage or engine nacelle.

LONGERON - A principal longitudinal member of a fuselage's framing, usually continuous across a number of supporting points.

As the upper longerons are usually parallel to the propeller axis, they may be used as a base line. Align one side of the center section first, then the other side, and lastly the front.

at the front end of the machine, examine carefully the front end of the fuselage to make sure that the radiator is properly secured to the carrier plate and that the carrier or nose plate is properly secured to the front end of the fuselage longerons.

It had a Warren girder-type fuselage of high-tensile steel tubes, over which sat frames and longerons that carried the doped linen fabric covering.

The smooth surface of the longeron, which has no exposed edge, should be melted, very slightly concave and should have clearly sucked the molten metal of the puddle into it, making it flow along the surface into the joint.

A former within the fuselage used as internal support for longerons, sheet sides, stringers and so on.

SEMI-MONOCOQUE - An aircraft structure in which the outer skin is inadequate to carry the primary stresses, and is reinforced by frames, formers and longerons.

Examples include NASA's experimental lifting body designs and the Vought XF5U-1 Flying Flapjack. In semi-monocoque type most of the loads are carried by longerons and stringers a part of load is carried by skin.

When the load is reversed, the members which were carrying compression now are subjected to tension and those which were carrying tension are under compression. The truss itself consists of a welded tubular steel structure with longerons (horizontal ...
