Low-speed flight

For vertical take-off, hovering, low-speed flight, and vertical landing, the main airfoil is spun like a helicopter's rotor by directing the exhaust from a jet engine through thrust nozzles in the wingtips.

Slats Moveable surfaces on the leading edge of the wing that help airflow in low-speed flight. They enable the wing to fly at lower airspeeds than without them by directing the airflow over the wing and preventing separation of the airflow.

Of all the myriad planforms used, they can typically be grouped into those used for low-speed flight, found on general aviation aircraft, and those used for high-speed flight, found on many military aircraft and airliners.
