Powered by a Merlin II engine, the maiden flight of the first production aircraft took place on 12 October 1937.

Mozhaiski's aeroplane made its maiden flight at Krasnoye Selo in 1884. It was launched from a ramp and flew for 98 feet (29.87 m).
He died in St. Petersburg on 20th March, 1890.

Johnston, his copilot Jim Gannet and flight engineer Tom Layne sat on the drenched runway at Renton Municipal Airport in the first production 707, checked weather reports and waited for the chance to take the new airplane up for its maiden flight.
