Maintaining Your Airplane
As I mentioned in the previous section, a condition inspection is required every 12 calendar months on amateur-built aircraft. This check is similar to an annual inspection required by FAR Part 43 on production airplanes.

Maintaining a steady flight requires a balance, often described as an equilibrium of all the forces acting upon an airplane. Weight, lift, thrust and drag are the acting forces on an airplane.

Maintaining an accurate fuel log during any flight is mandatory. Monitoring the fuel consumption rate in combination with the fuel gauge readings is an important task of the pilot in command.

In order to maintain cool heads under the cowling, the new 550K utilizes several minor mods to improve airflow. The updated TCM powerplant mounts additional NACA vents to streamline cooling flow and some other minor cowling mods.

In order to maintain its position over the center, the nose is pointed off-center, slightly into the wind. Thus the longitudinal axis of the aircraft is at an angle to the runway while its ground track is along the extended centerline of the runway.

LAMINAR-FLOW AIRFOIL - A low-drag airfoil designed to maintain laminar flow over a high percentage of the chord about itself. Often relatively thin, especially along the leading edge, with most of its bulk near the center of the chord.

Bush planes need to be rugged, reliable and simple to maintain. "Field maintenance" takes on a new meaning where the pilot literally needs to be able to perform basic maintenance and repair functions in the field.
