Aviation Routine Weather Report (METAR)

Aviation Routine Weather Report (METAR). Observation of current surface weather reported in a standard international format.

METAR - coded aerodrome Met report. Also SPECI, special civil aviation weather report, and TAF, terminal aerodrome forecast of weather expected.
MF - medium frequency. Radio waves with frequencies in the 300- 3,000 kHz range.

METAR - Acronym in FAA pilot briefings and weather reports simply means an "aviation routine weather report," but nobody seems certain about the original source.

Generally, the broadcast contains routeoriented data with specially prepared NWS forecasts, inflight advisories, and winds aloft. It also includes selected current information such as weather reports (METAR/SPECI), NOTAMs, and special notices.

The Service Ceiling is the height at which the rate of climb of any plane has dropped to 100ft. per minute. Current ceiling information is reported by the aviation routine weather report (METAR) an automated weather stations of various types.
