Oxidation

Oxidation: The action of combining any substance with oxygen. Oxidation may be rapid, as in an explosion; of moderate speed, as in the burning of solid fuels; or slow, as in the rusting of metals.

Oxidation is generally caused by the torch needing re-adjusting. If the flame has been allowed to become oxygen-rich, this is easily seen by the loss of color in the inner cone of the flame and the shape of the cone changing from a gentle, ...

Excessive oxidation must be removed and the cause taken care of. Rotating parts should not be installed with self locking nylon nuts and these nuts may not be used where high temperatures (under the cowling) are present.

The sheets from which aircraft are constructed usually are 'alclad,' meaning they have a thin layer of pure aluminum on both sides that will oxidize and create a barrier to further corrosion (which is really nothing more than oxidation gone wild).
