Pilot in Command
The pilot in command (PIC) of an aircraft is the person who is in charge of the aircraft and is the final authority over all operations and safety throughout the flight.

PILOT IN COMMAND (PiC) - The pilot responsible for the operation and safety of an aircraft during flight time.

As pilot in command you are responsible to ascertain that the aircraft is an airworthy condition. As such you are required to check all aircraft papers as weight (mass) and balance, aircraft logbooks, licenses and limitations.

The pilot in command of an aircraft must assess all the foregoing factors and conditions to ascertain the cumulative total distance required for take-off and obstacle clearance and then judge if the take-off can be safely conducted.

P1 - Pilot in command.
P2 - Co-pilot; only valid in logbooks if the aircraft requires a co-pilot to operate legally (so not appropriate for PPLs 'sharing' flights in single-engine aircraft).

As pilot in command, it is your responsibility to check these items.
You and your passenger jumped into the airplane and prepared to start the engine only to find no checklist.
The checklist may be a separate document readily available.

Medical certificates, or medicals for short, are required for anyone acting as pilot in command. A medical must be in your personal possession or readily accessible in the aircraft.

Large aircraft airline pilots must have a minimum of 1,500 hours of flight time, including at least 250 hours flying as a pilot in command of an aircraft.

They are usually left-hand because most small airplanes are piloted from the left seat (or the senior pilot or pilot in command sits in the left seat), and so the pilot has better visibility out the left window.
