Position report. A report over a known location as transmitted by an aircraft to ATC.

Over water there are obviously no reporting points so common landmarks are used as a reference and report a distance from them, ie 2 NM S/E of airfield.

Position Reports
Like clearances position reports have a historic order than has never changed for many years. Make a copy of the position format with some blank spaces to fill in information than changes.

Even in a free-flight area, air traffic control still requires a position report about once an hour. Flight planning systems organise this by inserting geographic waypoints at suitable intervals.

FORMATION FLIGHT- More than one aircraft which, by prior arrangement between the pilots, operate as a single aircraft with regard to navigation and position reporting.

VRP - visual reference point. (In the UK) Landmarks used for position reporting by aircraft
operating VFR.
VSI - vertical speed indicator. One of the primary flight instruments showing rate of climb or
descent. Also IVSI, instantaneous VSI.
