Registration Marks. All civil aircraft engaged in international navigation must bear their nationality and registration marks. The first letter or the first two letters indicate the nationality.

Annex 7 to the Convention on International Civil Aviation describes the definitions, location, and measurement of nationality and registration marks.

29 provides us with the size of registration marks and specifically allows us, as owners of experimental aircraft, to use 3 inch high numbers and letters providing our maximum cruising speed is less than 180 knots.
