RVSM [edit] Alternate airports Part of flight planning often involves the identification of one or more airports which can be flown to in case of unexpected conditions (such as weather) at the destination airport.

This requirement, known as Reduced Vertical Separation Minima, or RVSM, separates aircraft between 29,000ft and 41,000ft, and only allows aircraft flying in the same general direction to carry the same altitude.
Reduced vertical separation minimum (RVSM). Reduces the vertical separation between flight level (FL) 290-410 from 2,000 feet to 1,000 feet and makes six additional FLs available for operation. Also see DRVSM.
Only RVSM-qualified airplanes may travel between 28,000 and 41,000 feet in domestic airspace. Cruising speeds are at a constant mach number, often about 82 percent of the speed of sound.

Ascend to the medium flight levels-the Evolution is approved for flight at FL280, the maximum non-RVSM height-and you should see the magic 270 knots. With a stall at only 61 knots, this means the Evolution enjoys a flight-envelope speed ratio of 4.
