Sandstorm: A wind laden with sand or dust which may cover a large area and reduce visibility. Sandstorms frequently held up air operations in the Second World War in North Africa.

 


SIGMETs (acronym for "SIGnificant METeorological information") warn of the following weather hazards: severe icing, severe and extreme turbulence, duststorms, sandstorms or volcanic ash lowering visibility to less than 3 miles.

SIGMET- A weather advisory issued concerning weather significant to the safety of all aircraft. SIGMET advisories cover severe and extreme turbulence, severe icing, and widespread dust or sandstorms that reduce visibility to less than 3 miles.

Dust or ash clogging the air intakes (as in sandstorms in desert operating conditions or ash clouds in volcanic eruptions). For helicopters, this is also a major problem during a Brownout.
