As a result of the recommendations of the White House Commission on Aviation Safety and Security, published in February 1997, the FAA has purchased and deployed sophisticated explosive-detection screening equipment at certain U.S.

All air traffic controllers work for the FAA and all must go through a screening process and rigorous training before they are certified to control airplanes.

To qualify for screening, candidates must complete the sophomore year of the aeronautical science degree program, rank in the top 20 percent of their class academically, and be recommended by an Embry-Riddle professor.
