Seams: Flaws produced in the surface of tubes during drawing operations. They are usually the result of dirt in the dies.

 


' I ask a woman as she meticulously applies scallop-edged fabric tape to stretched Ceconite seams. Her intense eyes follow each inch of the tape. 'I'm strengthening these seams,' she answers brightly.

To really understand flying balls or cylinders, you would need to account for the direct effect of spin on circulation, the effect of spin on separation, the effect of seams on separation, et cetera. That would go beyond the scope of this book.

Floats and hulls should be inspected for obvious or apparent defects and damage, such as loose rivets, corrosion, separation of seams, punctures, and general condition of the metal skin.
