SPONSON - A short, winglike protuberance on each side of a seaplane to increase lateral stability. SQUAWK - A four-digit number which is dialed into his transponder by a pilot to identify his aircraft to air traffic controllers ...
Sponsons: Short wing-like projections on each side of the lower portion of a flying-boat hull to maintain its lateral balance on the water.
A biplane-style Type-1 utilizing a shoulder mounted main lift wing and a belly-mounted sponsons similar to those on combat and transport helicopters.
Speed is obviously reduced by the bulky floatation gear, whether that be floats, sponsons, or the "step" in the hull. Yaw stability is eroded in float-equipped seaplanes by the addition of surface area in front of the center of gravity.
You have to land with the wings level; otherwise one engine would hit the ground. A similar situation arises with certain amphibian aircraft that have outrigger-type floats or sponsons far from the centerline.
