Standard Terminal Arrival (STAR) Charts
Designed to expedite air traffic control arrival procedures and to facilitate transition between en route and instrument approach operations.

 


Standard terminal arrival route (STAR). A preplanned IFR ATC arrival procedure published for pilot use in graphic and/or textual form.

STANDARD TERMINAL ARRIVAL ROUTE (STAR) - A preplanned and published instrumental arrival route.
TA See TIME ABOVE (TA).

Standard Terminal Arrival Route (STAR) - A planned Instrument Flight Rules air traffic control arrival procedure published for pilot use in graphic and textual form.

Standard Terminal Arrivals (STARS)
At the end of the en route part of an IFR flight awaits the approach segment. The pilot gets rid of distractions and briefs the chart procedure.

It may be included in a Standard Terminal Arrival (STAR) or a Preferred IFR Route. The abbreviation "PAR" is used primarily within the ARTCC and should not be confused with the abbreviation for Precision Approach Radar.

In addition, flight plans may also contain SIDs (standard instrument departures), or STARS (standard terminal arrival routes), which are both procedures and checkpoints used to enter and exit the airway system.
