STOL

Aviation StewardessStopover

My STOL designs have sometimes been called ‘ugly' because of their unconventional shape.

STOL
Short Take Off and Landing. Describes an aircraft with special high-lift devices to keep the take off or landing run as short as possible.

STOL
Short takeoff and landing ability.
STOP WAY
an area beyond the takeoff runway, no less wide than the runway and centered upon the extended centerline of the runway, able to support the airplane ...

STOL AIRCRAFT-
(See SHORT TAKEOFF AND LANDING AIRCRAFT.)
STOP ALTITUDE SQUAWK- Used by ATC to inform an aircraft to turn-off the automatic altitude reporting feature of its transponder.

STOL - Short take-off and landing capability.

STREAMLINE - To shape a structure so that it will cause the minimum aerodynamic drag.

On STOL airplanes, a combination of double slotted flaps and leading edge slats are common.

VSI: Vertical Speed Indicator. One of the primary flight instruments showing rate of climb or descent.
V/STOL: Vertical and Short Take-Off and Landing.
VTOL: Vertical Take-Off and Landing.

With the 65-hp Rotax 582, the Zenair STOL CH-701 at full gross stalls at 28 mph, cruises at 74 mph (with a top speed of 82 mph). Considering that the cruise speed is 2-1/2 times the stall speed, this is not bad at all.

The climb angle after takeoff is relatively shallow, similar to that of a STOL fixed-wing aircraft. Sufficient area must be available after takeoff for the autogyro to turn and avoid obstacles during climb.

May be by a small amount for STOL performance. The only example is the F-8 Crusader.
Variable camber - The leading and trailing edge sections of the wing pivot down to increase the effective camber of the wing.

system for post-type certification approval of aircraft modifications such as re- engining, STOL kits, etc, where the full certification process is not deemed necessary.

Also, the high price of turbo-prop aircraft make them more apt when used where high-performance short-takeoff and landings (STOL) are required at modest flight speeds.
