Stress
There are two types of stress: acute and chronic. Acute stress relates to the demands placed on the body because of current issues; for example, time constraints for converting the aircraft from passenger to cargo configuration.

Stress: The product of the load on a body divided by the area subjected to load, originally expressed in foot-pounds per square inch. A body is in tension when the force tends to pull it apart.

I cannot stress enough that a poor approach followed by an attempt to salvage a landing is an excellent reason for adding full power and making a go around! In addition, a good, safe pilot always thinks ahead of the airplane.

First, the stress on a machine cannot be accurately measured by a smaller model, and simply multiplying the proportions of the model's dimensions does not result in a structurally sound machine.

Though the Mayday distress signal can be transmitted over any frequency aircraft have special frequencies that are specifically for distress calls. The frequency 121.

In other words, for V parts and castings which require light metal construction, but which are under no particular stress. Tin and copper are used for ferrules of wire joints and for tankage. Copper or brass wire are used for safety wires.

You might think the stresses would be greatest in the middle of the strip where the bend is greatest. In fact, the stresses are highest at the ends of the strip. Here, the strip must handle three kinds of stresses when it bends.

Remember that VA is the speed above any full or abrupt control movement (by pilot or turbulence) can cause excessive stress on the aircraft structure and depends on the weight of the aircraft. So remain below VA.

Once the flapping hinge was installed, rotor blades were breaking due to high stress. The stress was identified as being caused by coriolis force and the installation of another hinge, the lead-lag hinge solved that problem.

More importantly, the airframe was designed so that the skin of the aircraft bore most of the stress on the plane during flight. There was no interior skeleton of metal spars, thus giving passengers more room than they had in the 247.

It then requires more energy to "rip" it out, and the aluminum stringer frame and stressed-skin construction then need much more energy to start to bend, buckle and twist.

The affordable, cheaper plastic parts are more prone to snapping under stress than their metallic counterparts.

If the blade is rigidly attached to the mast but isn't strong enough, it could develop stresses large enough to break the blade. This is exactly what happened to Juan de l'Cierva's early rotor systems. His solution was a lead lag hinge.

Paul Sterling, owner of Sterling Aviation in Kent, Washington, is working with the FAA to modify the wing spar and lower the stress levels of critical components in the wing, hopefully adding 5,000 hours to the wing's life.
