Submarine: A small ship specifically designed to submerge and proceed under water to avoid detection and so take advantage of the element of surprise, one of the most telling tactics of warfare.

 


Locating Submarines.-For coast patrol or submarine spotting, the airplane is an important factor, for from an airplane it is possible to see for a considerable depth into the water, and to locate hostile submarines.

For instance, if the seating position is flatter than normal, a seat belt and shoulder harness alone are of little use because the pilot will "submarine", or slide under the belt on impact. A crotch strap is needed in that situation.
