Suction

Aviation SubstitutionsSumps

Suction relief valve. A relief valve in an instrument vacuum system required to maintain the correct low pressure inside the instrument case for the proper operation of the gyros.

Suction: A lowering of pressure in a confined space causing a fluid to enter, or one body to adhere to another, under atmospheric pressure.

The pressure and suction created by the wing are conveniently measured in multiples of the dynamic pressure.4 It is usually represented by the symbol Q. For a typical general-aviation flight situation, Q is about half a pound per square inch.

The spray guns used for smaller jobs are usually suction fed. The same high pressure is used to atomize the paints. The coating is held in a quart cup and it is drawn into the airstream by the high pressure airflow creating a vacuum.

The intake suction from a jet engine is often powerful enough to suck up loose material lying on the runway, and the winds created by a helicopter or prop-driven aircraft's rotors or by a jet blast can send such objects airborne, ...

One time I wrote, Suction gauge shows inadequate suction on a Post-it and placed it over the suction gauge. I looked away to take care of cockpit business. Later, I saw the student had written, 'No it doesn't!' on the Post-it. I love sharp students.

As the AOA of the wing section is increased, the point of minimum pressure moves towards the leading edge, with increasingly high suction being achieved.

Pneumatic (suction) system failures are emergencies. If you do not have a backup system declare an emergency and request a vector to the nearest VFR.

BOUNDARY-LAYER CONTROL - The design or control of slotted or perforated wings with suction methods to reduce undesirable aerodynamic effects caused by the boundary layer— ...
