Thunderstorms may be classified in four generalised types - single-cell, isolated multicell cluster, multicell squall line (refer 9.6 below) and supercell, although supercells are also multi-cellular.

Thunderstorm: Strong convectional movements in the atmosphere which give rise to intense vertical currents of air. Thunderstorms are usually heralded by towering cumulo-nimbus clouds followed by heavy rain or hail, thunder and lightning.

Coordinated Universal Time (abbreviated as UTC, and therefore often spelled out as Universal Time Coordinated and sometimes as Universal Coordinated Time) is the standard time common to every place in the world.

[edit] Lightning (thunderstorms)
Automated airport weather stations within the United States use the National Lightning Detection Network (NLDN) to detect lightning via the Automatic Lightning Detection and Reporting System (ALDARS).

Is it necessary for a pilot to have experience at flying in thunderstorms and dangerous icing conditions to be considered qualified to fly an airliner? If you believe that then you’ll also believe that people go to the Orient to get oriented.

However, there is a direct correlation between the degree of turbulence and other weather features associated with thunderstorms and the radar weather echo intensity.

The briefer would have advised you that at this time of year late afternoon scattered thunderstorms are the norm and you may want to be back on the ground before they develop.

This SIGMET is issued anytime there is convective activity such as thunderstorms covering an area of more then 3000 square miles.

Convective SIGMETs are issued for tornadoes, lines of thunderstorms, embedded thunderstorms of any intensity level, areas of thunderstorms greater than or equal to VIP level 4 with an area coverage of 4/10 (40%) or more, and hail 3/4 inch or greater.

SIGMET - warning of severe weather conditions (active thunderstorms, hail, severe turbulence, icing etc.) issued my Met offices.
sl - sea level.

TURBULENCE - Bad weather where the aircraft might be in a cloud, wind currents or thunderstorm.
AVIATION TERMINOLOGY
D.G.C.A. - Director General of Civil Aviation ...

Convective SIGMET. Weather advisory concerning convective weather significant to the safety of all aircraft, including thunderstorms, hail, and tornadoes.

SIGMETs are of operational importance to even large transport aircraft, and generally highlight conditions like observed thunderstorm systems (including tornadoes) and areas of reported or forecast severe icing.

A type of weather advisory regarding severe weather conditions (thunderstorms, turbulence, icing, volcanic ash, etc.) which could pose a threat to all types of aircraft. AIRMET is a less inclusive type of advisory.
SOB: Souls (persons) On Board.

So, they are terrified of anything resembling a cloud (in their defense, during August, we hold the patent on killer thunderstorms).
