Trade Winds: Persistent winds which blow in latitudes 30 degrees North and South, towards the equitorial doldrums, north-east in the northern hemisphere and south-east in the southern hemisphere.
The trade winds converging at a high angle at the equatorial trough, the "doldrums", form the intertropical convergence zone [ITCZ].
In days of old, sailing-ship captains would use the trade winds to travel in one direction and use the prevailing westerlies to travel in the other direction.
