Transponder
A transponder is an electronic device aboard an aircraft that enhances its identity on the air-traffic controllers RADAR screen.

today, you're required to have a transponder, which responds to interrogation from primary and secondary surveillance radar signals, sending altitude and a four-digit 'squawk code' to the radar site.

transponder
A receiver/transmitter which will generate a reply signal upon proper interrogation; the interrogation and reply being on different frequencies

Transponder. The airborne portion of the ATC radar beacon system.
Transponder code. One of 4,096 four-digit discrete codes ATC assigns to distinguish between aircraft.

Transponder: A radio transmitter in the plane that responds to the radar signal from Air Traffic Control, permitting it to easily detect the airplane. The transponder it set to a "squalk code" to permit the aircraft to be identified.

Transponder
A transponder is a piece of avionics that replies to a radar signal with a short identifier and (if it knows it) the altitude of the aircraft. This information makes ATC's life easier, which makes the pilot's easier.

Transponders
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) uses radar to monitor the position and flow of aircraft in flight. When the radar beam sweeps across an aircraft, some of that radio energy is reflected back to the radar installation.

TRANSPONDER A special onboard 1090 MHz radio transmitter to enhance and code an aircraft's radar return.

TRANSPONDER - An airborne transmitter that responds to ground-based interrogation signals to provide air traffic controllers with more accurate and reliable position information than would be possible with "passive" radar; ...

Transponder Landing System
System pings on transponder frequency/code. Antenna arrays on ground work with computer to give time of arrival for distance (range) and position relative to angle of arrival (glideslope).

Transponder
An electronic device that "responds" to interrogation by ground-based radar with a special four-digit code that specifically identifies the aircraft on which it is located.

TRANSPONDER
Transmitter-Responder
TRANSPONDER (TX)
A receiver/transmitter which will generate a reply signal upon proper interrogation; the interrogation and reply being on different frequencies.

For example, a Mitsubishi Mu-2 equipped with an altitude reporting transponder and GPS would use MU2/G. Equipment codes may be found in the FAA Airman's Information Manual.

What is that cylindrical thing underneath the belly?

A radar system comprising a ground-based transmitter/receiver which interrogates a compatible unit in the aircraft (the transponder), providing instant radar identification without having to manoeuvre.

IFF - Identification Friend or Foe - a transponder fitted to all aircraft that allows it to be identified and tracked by ATC and friendly forces
ILS - Instrument Landing System ...

Transponder A device aboard an aircraft for transmitting data to an air traffic control radar system. Each time the transponder is queried by the radar, it responds with a numeric code and the aircraft's altitude.

Sometimes called secondary surveillance radar (SSR), which utilizes a transponder in the aircraft. The ground equipment is an interrogating unit, in which the beacon antenna is mounted so it rotates with the surveillance antenna.

A standard atmosphere has been established to enable comparison of aircraft performance, calibration of instruments (altimeters, transponders encoders, etc) and meteorological purposes.

Similarly, if you have been assigned your own transponder code, don't bother to change it unless ATC asks you to. On the other hand if you are presently on the all-purpose code 1200, do not hesitate to switch to the emergency code, 7700.

N = None or unserviceable transponder
A = Mode A, no altitude reporting, 4096 codes
C = Mode C, altitude reporting, 4096 codes
S = Mode S, altitude and aircraft identification.

IFF- Identification Friend or Foe, part of the military's transponder system that tells other jets and ground crews if a dude is a good guy or a bad guy.

Digitizer - Any electronic device capable of converting information to a digital format; usually refers to encoding devices that convert sensed altitude into a transponder code.
DME - Distance Measuring Equipment.
DP - Deal Pending.

Operations within CLASS B airspace require an ATC clearance and at least a Private pilot certificate (local waivers available), radio communication, and an altitude-reporting (Mode C) transponder. Formerly called TCA.

It cost about $35 in spray cans custom-mixed to match the instrument panel and interior plastic and another $35 for a replacement plastic panel behind the throttle and mixture. The little comm radio and ugly ARC transponder worked fine, ...

will eventually be in bad condition or simply become obsolete that will need to be replaced during the life span of the aircraft. Some of these aircraft parts include audio panels, autopilots, HF radios, radar altimeters, storm scopes, transponders, ...
