Tropopause: The region of the atmosphere between the stratosphere and the troposphere.

The altitude of the tropopause, and thus the thickness of the troposphere, varies considerably. Typical altitudes are 55 000 feet in the tropics with a temperature of -70 °C and 29 000 feet in polar regions with a temperature of -50 °C.

The boundary between the troposphere and stratosphere is called the tropopause. The height of the tropopause varies with latitude, seasonal and diurnal changes.

Aircraft operating at high altitudes near the tropopause (mainly large jet airliners) emit aerosols and leave contrails, both of which can increase cirrus cloud formation - cloud cover may have increased by up to 0.2% since the birth of aviation.[5] ...

Jet Streams are air currents found in the stratosphere and tropopause being is located about 6 to 15 miles above the Earth surface. They are fast flowing bodies of air moving in the same direction and consist of relatively the same temperature.

In a well developed high pressure area subsidence inversions will inhibit vertical growth of cumuliform clouds. In warm air with a high tropopause, ...
