UNDER THE HOOD- Indicates that the pilot is using a hood to restrict visibility outside the cockpit while simulating instrument flight. An appropriately rated pilot is required in the other control seat while this operation is being conducted.
When you are under the hood, practicing flight by reference to instruments, you should start by telling your safety pilot (whether it's me or somebody else) “I'm delegating the traffic-spotting to you”.
Making a steep turn under the hood is made easier if you roll quickly into the turn and lock the nose attitude with your elbow. Some speed deterioration will occur by the 180-degree point so it is best that some power be added then.
Incidentally, Rhinebeck brought their newest demo airplane over, a replica Spad with a Lycoming hiding under the hood.
0-0 Takeoff: Taking off while under the hood. 1000, etc.: Numbers expressed in thousands usually refer to feet of altitude. AIRMET: Announcement of weather conditions that will effect small aircraft.
reproduced and is fully equipped with all the normal controls and instruments of an aeroplane. These are ingeniously linked so that actual flying conditions are reproduced when the student pilot sits inside the trainer and "flies" it under the hood.
