VNAV has been available in some dedicated aviation units for several years. You can enter a desired rate of descent and distance from an airport or waypoint, and the GPS tells you when you reach the top of your descent or VNAV profile.

VNAV
Vertical Navigation - A function of the Flight Management Computer that calculates, displays, and provides vertical guidance to a profile or path. Baro-VNAV refers to one such system that uses altimetry to measure vertical position.

For aircraft equipped for VNAV (vertical navigation equipment) almost every non-precision approach can be flown as though there were an electronic glide slope. This slope begins at the FAF and ends at 50' above the threshold.

VERTICAL NAVIGATION (VNAV)- A function of area navigation (RNAV) equipment which calculates, displays, and provides vertical guidance to a profile or path.

Global landing system (GLS). An instrument approach with lateral and vertical guidance with integrity limits (similar to barometric vertical navigation (BRO VNAV).

VNAV: Vertical Navigation
