How WAAS Works
WAAS uses a network of precisely-located ground reference stations that monitor GPS satellite signals. These stations are located throughout the continental U.S., Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Alaska, Canada and Mexico.

wake turbulence - wingtip vortices generated behind a wing producing lift. Behind a large heavy aircraft they can be powerful enough to roll or even break up a smaller aircraft.

More recently, the accuracy of GPS navigation was ratcheted up a notch when the FAA turned on the WAAS (wide area augmentation system) signal for use by general aviation on July 10, 2003.

Accuracy is achieved through corrections to the surveyed location of 25 wide area reference stations on the ground and the Global Positioning System (GPS) signal. WAAS was commissioned in July 2003, and is currently used solely by general aviation.
